15 Most Heartbreaking Deaths In Naruto, Ranked

15 Most Heartbreaking Deaths In Naruto, Ranked

Naruto is one of the world's most strong manga stories, and its anime adaptation has been authentic and lively since its debut in 2002.

Masashi Kishimoto's work then turned into Naruto: Shippuden, which ended in 2017 and began with the story of Boruto, Naruto's son.

Naruto was a cheeky teenage shinobi (ninja) who aspired to be his village's Hokage (leader) in a world torn apart by politics and conflict.

Rival villages clash while Konoha (their village) trains their younglings, including Naruto and his adversary, Sasuke, a descendant of the deadly Uchiha clan.

Naruto contended with the force of the Nine-Tails beast within him, while Sasuke sought vengeance for the extinction of his clan.

But they were soulmates, and their paths kept crossing as the terrorist organization Akatsuki waged war on all shinobi.

It turned out to be a hoax created by Kaguya, an alien entity who had been using the Uchihas (Madara and Obito) to enslave humanity over the years.

Everyone's paths eventually crossed, resulting in many personal battles and the loss of countless lives. So, here we present to you the 15 most painful deaths of Naruto.

15. Obito

Obito aspired to be a hero, and he trained alongside Kakashi and Rin under Naruto's father, Minato.

Obito had to learn to harness his headstrong ambition in order to become Hokage, which would cause him to act rashly in battle.

This resulted in an ambush in which a massive rock fell on him in a cave, leaving everyone certain he was dead.

Obito, on the other hand, was given a second shot at life when his clansman, an aged Madara, revived and groomed him to launch another huge ninja war against all the villages.

Obito disguised himself as Madara as he got older while fighting Kakashi's soldiers, this time as the secret Akatsuki mastermind, Tobi.

He would finally break free from this influence and aid Kakashi and Naruto in their battles against Madara and Kaguya, only to die as another redeemed hero, free to join Rin in the afterlife.

14. Rin

Obito adored Rin because she was a true darling. He wanted to return to his teammates when Madara stitched him up, so he did.

However, before passing out, he confronted Kakashi, who impaled her with his Chidori lightning-cutter.

Obito became infuriated and massacred everyone in his path before returning to Madara, ready to accept the concept that the world is nothing but a living nightmare.

What made Rin's death even more tragic was that Madara had the Hidden Mist village kidnap her and implant the Three-Tails beast, Isobu, into her, which was to be released upon her rescue in order to murder everyone in Konoha.

Obito witnessed Rin flinging her body towards Kakashi's hit, which was intended for her kidnappers.

She gave herself up for Konoha, but that didn't stop her from attempting to shepherd Obito back into the light of the afterlife.

13. Haku & Zabuza

As shinobi in training, this duo provided Naruto and Sasuke with their first taste of high-stakes combat.

Haku, like them, was young and an accomplice of Zabuza, a mercenary who came into Kakashi's sights.

While the grownups fought, Haku (who was disguised) would utilize ice powers to control Sasuke, but this infuriated Naruto, who channelled the power of the Nine-Tails and began cutting loose.

Naruto was eventually victorious, sparing Haku because he recognized that he had previously befriended the little fighter.

However, there would be no happy ending as Haku received a deadly strike from Kakashi that was intended for Zabuza.

The latter was subsequently attacked by his contractors, who killed them in a fight that also killed him.

Zabuza then begged to be buried near Haku so that they may enter the afterlife together, as he had protected Haku from the ordinary life of an orphan.

12. Hiruzen: The Third Hokage

Hiruzen was a member of the Sarutobi clan who helped Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade become the famed Konoha ninjas known as the Sannin.

He eventually handed up the role of Hokage to Minato, but the latter's death as the Fourth Hokage prompted Hiruzen to return for a second tenure, as he wanted to keep a close check on Naruto and the Nine-Tails within him.

As Naruto, Sasuke, and the next generation matured, they entered the ninja trials to graduate, only to have Orochimaru, who had turned evil, return and invade Konoha.

As Hiruzen confronted the villain, things turned old-school when Orochimaru, who was also a mad geneticist, revived the original two Hokages, Hashirama and Tobirama, who were reputed to be two of the best ninjas ever.

Hiruzen beat them and subsequently overthrew Orichimaru, but he was tragically murdered. He died with a smile on his face, having taught his old student one last lesson.

11. The Uchiha Clan

Because the Uchihas were constantly vicious, Madara forced them into countless conflicts against Hashirama and his Senju clan.

Both were descended from Kaguya's son, Hagoromo, and would always be at odds.

However, a pact was signed, and the unification of both clans resulted in the formation of Konoha.

Having said that, even if Hashirama was made Hokage, Madara understood his people could never be trusted and was left as a lone antagonist.

Konoha would be restless even after both stalwarts died since the Uchiha were held on the outskirts of the village and were only seen as a military force.

This prompted their hidden insurrection to kill everyone else and take over the village.

Itachi chose not to follow in their footsteps, killing them all in collaboration with Obito, who appeared to be Madara.

Except for Sasuke, every man, woman, and kid was slaughtered in this heartbreaking holocaust that effectively halted a potential civil war.

10. Neji

Neji's death was particularly painful because he was the first of Naruto's generation to die.

He evolved from being Naruto's competitor to a close buddy, and when Obito summoned the gargantuan destroyer, the Ten-Tails, wooden arrows began to stream forth, killing everyone in their path.

When Naruto was in danger, Hinata (his future wife and Neji's cousin) protected him.

In turn, Neji moved to shelter both Hinata and Naruto, causing him to be mortally impaled.

With his last breath, he warned Naruto to be cautious because he was the only one who could save everyone.

Naruto was broken since he had always admired Neji as a guy of intelligence and honour. Ironically, when Neji died, he felt a bond with his deceased father.

The latter had previously been offered as a blood sacrifice to another rival clan in order to avoid a big family battle.

9. Shisui

Itachi's idol and the guy who formed him as a hero was Shisui Uchiha.

He was also the first to alert the Third Hokage of the Uchiha's intended revolt, and as a result, his clansmen, led by Danzo, turned against him, attempting to remove his eye in order to enhance their authority.

Shisui fought back, losing only one eye before approaching Itachi.

He committed suicide in Itachi's presence and offered his other eye to Itachi for emergency use, awakening the Mangekyo Sharingan in Itachi.

This was an ocular power that increased Itachi's might and also served as the transfer of the baton of justice.

Shisui's death was tragic since he was devoted to Konoha and urged Itachi to lead the Uchihas back into the light. It didn't happen, but Itachi tried to live his life by remembering his deceased colleague.

8. Asuma

Asuma was Hiruzen's son, and he, like Kakashi and the older generation, mentored children.

Following his father's death, he trained his charges to be far more careful, and he dispatched a team, which included Shikamaru, to scout the burgeoning Akatsuki threat.

They would then engage in a lengthy battle with Kakuzu and the immortal known as Hidan.

Hidan used his talents to link his health to Asuma's, and he stabbed himself in the heart during a difficult struggle.

As a result, Asuma died while smoking his distinctive cigarette as the Akatsuki members escaped.

Shikamaru's character would be shaped by this event, as he matured and learnt how to murder Hidan later on.

Shikamaru also mentored Asuma's kid back home before becoming Naruto's adviser when he became Hokage, moulding himself in a kind, loving manner similar to his former sensei.

7. Sakumo

Sakumo, another great ninja, was revered by his son. When his friends' lives were at risk on a critical assignment, he abandoned it to save them.

This was frowned upon and garnered Konoha's wrath. Sakumo was eventually reviled for his conduct, even by those he saved.

Because he was perceived as dishonorable, he became despondent, causing his abilities to decrease. He eventually committed suicide.

This death was never depicted on-screen, but the image of his disappearing into the darkness was vivid.

Suicide was a sensitive subject for shinobi, thus Kakashi lived his life meticulously by the rules.

However, Kakashi and his father reunited in the afterlife right before Nagato resurrected him, and he forgave Sakumo, telling him he was always glad to be a son.

This allowed his father to finally leave limbo and meet Kakashi's mother in the afterlife.

6. Nagato

Using his sage mode, Naruto returned to Konoha just in time to spare it from complete annihilation by Pain and the Akatsuki.

He was then lured to the source of the Akatsuki's power, which turned out to be Nagato, a descendant of Naruto.

Naruto, on the other hand, fought him with words, attempting to redeem him after Nagato spoke of how heroic he was, just like Naruto.

That is, until conflict murdered his companion Yahiko, leaving him and his other friend, Konan, alone in a harsh world.

Madara and Obito would combine them to become the Akatsuki, empowering Nagato with Rinnegan eyes.

Naruto eventually persuaded him to make amends, and Nagato then used the Rinnegan to resurrect all of Konoha, although he perished in the process.

This motivated not only Naruto but also Konan, who understood that there was yet hope.

5. Konan

Nagato atoned for his sins by restoring Konoha. When Konan realized this, she abandoned the Akatsuki in order to pursue the same path of light that Naruto had rekindled.

Tobi a.k.a. Obito, on the other hand, sought Nagato's body so he could extract the Rinnegan for himself and Madara's enslavement of mankind in a dream world.

They fought as Konan warned him that she was returning to the life she, Nagato, and their deceased companion, Yahiko, desired as children: a life free of war.

Tobi, on the other hand, knew her from the inside out and countered every move she made until grabbing her by the throat, putting her under genjutsu (dream magic), and taking her life.

He knew where Nagato was by then and left, unconcerned about what happened to the Akatsuki.

It was a thrilling death because it showed Naruto's inspirational movement could be quickly shut down.

4. Konoha

When the Akatsuki launched an all-out assault on Konoha, the hamlet was completely exposed.

Itachi and Sasuke were fighting each other, while Naruto was studying the formidable art of sage mode.

Pain, who was commanding the Akatsuki at the time, then launched the group's full-fledged assault on Naruto's country to send a message that they were ready to wipe out all shinobi.

From Hiruzen's grandson, Konohamaru, to Kakashi and Tsunade, the new Hokage, everyone sought to defend the village, but the Akatsuki were simply too powerful and persistent.

They smashed the majority of the village, not caring about men, women, or kids, and the mayhem was evident as all that was left was smoke, ash, and rubble.

It was one of the show's most bloody battle scenes, and it finished with the iconic sight of a dead Kakashi staring at the sky.

3. Minato & Kushina

Naruto's parents' death was one of the show's most dramatic and vulnerable chapters. Obito bewitched Kushina and unleashed the Nine-Tails on Konoha when she went into labor.

He ended up confronting Minato, his old master, who wanted to use his life to preserve the village and his family.

The other shinobi worked hard to stop the rampaging beast, while Minato fought Obito, who was disguised as Madara because everyone assumed Obito was dead.

However, the Uchiha's plot was foiled when Kushina joined Minato on the battlefield.

They eventually vanquished him, but not before both of them went through a ceremony that would cost them their lives.

They had to implant the Nine-Tails into their newborn infant in order to halt it, thereby creating Naruto's destiny.

Sarutobi would now serve as Hokage, overseeing Naruto's development.

2. Jiraiya

Jiraiya's death marked a watershed moment in Naruto's life, transforming the adolescent into a full-fledged warrior and Konoha's greatest protector.

Jiraiya, who trained and groomed Minato to become a Hokage, returned to Konoha to do the same for Minato's son.

He travelled a lot, but with Tsunade taking over as Hokage, Orochimaru on the loose, and the Akatsuki planning, he became Naruto's mentor as Kakashi nurtured Sasuke.

Jiraiya ended himself facing Pain while studying the Akatsuki after Naruto went out to learn his sage powers.

Fans were shocked to learn that Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko were previously Jiraiya pupils who became evil owing to the never-ending warfare around them.

The renowned ninja was impaled and perished at the bottom of the ocean, but before he died, he sent indications back to Konoha on how to defeat the Akatsuki.

1. Itachi

Itachi was a genius who grew up adoring Konoha.

Even when his feared Uchiha clan revolted against the other villagers, Itachi made the difficult decision to wipe them out, including his parents, since he was always concerned with the greater good.

Sasuke, whom he had left alive, would despise him and strive to murder him.

Itachi went undercover inside the Akatsuki, thinking that Sasuke's animosity and rivalry with Naruto would empower him to do what Itachi couldn't protect the village and redeem the Uchiha name.

The brothers eventually engaged in an emotional struggle, and Itachi, who was dying of cancer, died after beating his brother.

He revealed various secrets and powers to Sasuke, who understood Itachi was, after all, a great dark knight.

Itachi would eventually be resurrected for a short time to assist his brother.
